Turkey Club Sandwich

There's something so satisfying about a good sandwich.  But here's the thing - there are a few very important factors in a great sandwich.  Number one of course is the bread.  You can't have a good sandwich without good bread.  For these sandwiches, we used some freshly baked everything bagel seasoning bread.  It's also super important to toast your bread so it'll hold up to all the fillings.  I tried both with this sandwich - un-toasted and toasted bead - and the toasted bread was a clear winner.  You don't have to go super dark, in fact you probably can't even tell from the picture below that the bread is toasted, but a light toast will help with your overall sandwich structure.

Another crucial factor in sandwich composition is that more is not always better.  Yes, there are quite a few ingredients in this sandwich, but I could have added more.  There's no cheese or pickles, which are both things I love, but they would have made the sandwich less structurally sound. My solution?  Have a pickle on the side of the sandwich like they do at a deli.  Self-editing is something that even great chefs sometimes have trouble with, but in the case of sandwiches, it's pretty key.  There's nothing worse than a sandwich that totally falls apart after the first bite.

My last key factor in creating a delicious sandwich is moisture.  It's important that you have enough moisture content in your sandwich so you're not choking on dry bread.  I like to do this by having a "wet" ingredient that I add to each piece of bread.  Mayo and mustard are always a go-to for this, but mashed avocado works well too.  If you're not into mayo or mustard, you can always use avocado to help moisten things up a little bit.  So without further ado, here's what's in this sandwich an how I put it together.

Total Time: 5 minutes
Servings: 1

Ingredients:
2 slices bread
1 tbs mayo
1 tbs dijon mustard
2 romaine lettuce leaves
1 beefsteak tomato, thinly sliced
2 slices crispy bacon
Roasted turkey
1/2 avocado, mashed
Optional: pickled jalapenos

Instructions:

1. Lightly toast the bread and add with mayo & mustard on one side and mashed avocado on the other.

2. Layer on the other ingredients - turkey, lettuce, tomato, bacon.

3. Carefully close the sandwich by folding one of the sides over the other (I recommend the side with the bacon because it has fewer ingredients that might slide around).  Cut your sandwich in half and enjoy!

This sandwich really is just the perfect combination of fresh veggies, salty meats, and creamy avocado.  The pickled jalapenos add a great touch of acidity and spice as well!
